The former Old Mount Vernon High School will begin its next chapter as “The Commons of Mount Vernon,” the newly announced name for a redevelopment project expected to open in fall 2026.
Construction crews are transforming the aging school building into a learning center designed to prepare Mount Vernon residents for new opportunities in Fairfax County. Supervisor Dan Storck revealed the name during Mount Vernon’s annual town hall meeting.
The event began in an exhibit hall featuring displays from local organizations, including the South County Chamber of Commerce and the National Museum of the United States Army.
About 250 people attended in the auditorium, while another 200 participated online. Guests included Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, U.S. Reps. Gerry Connolly and Don Beyer, and Fairfax County Executive Bryan Hill.
The meeting also honored Gerry Hyland, the longtime former Mount Vernon supervisor who recently died. A tribute video highlighted Hyland’s public service and accomplishments across the district.
“Gerry was a true community pillar,” Storck said.
Using technology featured in previous town halls, Storck then led a virtual flying tour of the district’s 2024 accomplishments. The presentation highlighted the rebuilt recreation center on Beacon Hill Road, affordable housing and transportation improvements across Mount Vernon.
