Mount Vernon’s Hybla Valley community is getting a new place to skateboard, shoot hoops, play futsal and enjoy the outdoors after years of planning and construction.

County officials and park representatives from Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck’s office will celebrate the renovated Mount Vernon Woods Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Mount Vernon Woods Park is a wonderful addition to our broader community, offering a welcoming space where residents of all ages can gather, stay active and connect with one another,” Storck said. “Its impact will be felt by so many who live, work, and play in the community.”

The park’s new amenities include a large open lawn, a multisport court for basketball and futsal, an all-abilities playground and a skate park shaped by community input. Visitors will also find a fitness area, picnic pavilion, drinking fountain, landscaped seating areas and other spaces for relaxation.

The improvements bring active recreation facilities to a neighborhood beside the forested wetlands of Huntley Meadows Park, which does not have soccer fields or a playground.

The celebration will feature skateboard demonstrations and instruction from Fairfax Surf Shop, soccer activities led by Golden Boot Soccer and additional recreation for all ages. Shuttle service between Gum Springs Community Center and Mount Vernon Woods Park will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Planning for the redevelopment began in 2015 and continued through several revisions. The project was included in the Fairfax County Park Authority’s 2020 bond project list, with funding for concept design becoming available in late 2021. Construction began in summer 2024.

Mount Vernon Woods Park is located at 4014 Fielding St. in Alexandria.
