Fairfax County Public Schools is combining specialized English-language instruction with standard classroom lessons to help multilingual learners develop academic language and greater confidence.
Students who enter the school system speaking a language other than English bring valuable existing strengths while adapting to unfamiliar words, lessons, and classroom expectations. The district’s rigorous English language development curriculum builds on those abilities and provides support intended to help students succeed in school, college, careers, and everyday life.
During the Strategic Plan Update at an April 9 public meeting, Dr. Reid shared a video showing how the curriculum and related services support multilingual students. The presentation depicted students moving “up and up” as they developed their language skills and worked toward a bright future.
The district says the effects reach beyond academic progress. Targeted instruction can help students become more comfortable and self-assured as they navigate new experiences. Although learning in a different language may initially feel unfamiliar, that process can ultimately strengthen students while preserving the lifelong benefits of multilingualism.
