Metro has reopened Navy Yard station’s west entrance on Half Street 33 days ahead of schedule, restoring full access before peak spring traffic for events at Nationals Park and Audi Field.

The entrance had been closed since Oct. 1, 2025, while crews replaced two mezzanine escalators and three escalators serving the west entrance. The project was completed on budget.

The west entrance elevator has also returned to service, improving accessibility at the station.

The five new transit-grade escalators include brighter LED lighting, energy-efficient motors and remote monitoring. The upgrades are designed to handle the large crowds that pass through Navy Yard during games and other major events.

Metro Executive Vice President and Chief Infrastructure Officer Theresa M. Impastato credited the agency’s team with preparing the station to move thousands of fans during the upcoming baseball season at Nationals Park and soccer season at Audi Field. She also thanked riders for their patience during the extended closure.

Metro previously replaced all four escalators at Navy Yard’s east entrance.

As of February, the transit agency had replaced 135 of 145 escalators included in its multiyear modernization project. Work completed during the previous year covered escalators at the Dupont Circle south entrance, Vienna, L’Enfant Plaza east entrance, Franconia-Springfield, Pentagon north entrance, Medical Center, Crystal City and both Navy Yard entrances.

Additional replacements are scheduled in 2026 at Rosslyn, Gallery Place, the L’Enfant Plaza west entrance and Foggy Bottom.
