Garfield Elementary School students gained new reading options through a book donation from the Library of Congress and Springfield Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Students, staff and community members gathered at the school to formally welcome the collection. The books will support classroom instruction and independent reading while giving students more opportunities to explore their interests.
Virginia Rep. James Walkinshaw addressed an audience made up largely of fifth- and sixth-grade students. He discussed honoring veterans and supporting military families before answering questions about Congress and the federal government.
Springfield VFW Capt. Steve Williams introduced Walkinshaw and spoke about April’s designation as the Month of the Military Child.
The event also highlighted Garfield Elementary’s status as a Purple Star School, a designation recognizing its commitment to military-connected students and families.
The expanded library collection reflects a partnership intended to support students’ learning while strengthening ties among the school, veterans and the broader community.
