Meow Town Cat Lounge opened its doors Jan. 16, giving visitors a cozy place to unwind while helping adoptable cats become comfortable around people and find permanent homes.
The Chain Bridge Road lounge charges $25 for a 50-minute session. About 10 cats roamed the space during a recent visit, with guests free to feed, pet and play with them or simply watch their different personalities emerge.
A New York theme runs throughout the interior, which is decorated with mementos from the city. Staff members greet visitors, take their coats and explain the lounge rules before allowing them to meet the cats.
Inside, soft music contributes to the calm atmosphere. Chairs and couches provide places for guests to relax, while toys and climbing structures keep the cats active. Staff members offer treats visitors can give the animals and share details about each cat’s distinctive habits and temperament.
Every cat at Meow Town is available for adoption. The lounge also gives the animals regular contact with people, potentially helping them adjust to future homes. Visitors do not need to be prospective adopters, however, to enjoy spending time with the cats.
Despite its name and lounge-like setup, Meow Town is not a café. Complimentary prepackaged drinks and snacks are available, but it does not serve freshly prepared food.
The result is a warm, welcoming retreat for cat lovers, whether they hope to adopt or simply want a quiet break from daily life.
