A new shared-use path has dramatically shortened the trip from several Herndon neighborhoods to the Innovation Center Metrorail Station, replacing what had been a two- to three-mile walk or bike ride with a direct half-mile connection.
Local elected officials, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and other county agencies formally opened the route with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Feb. 27, 2026.
The Innovation Station North Neighborhood Access project includes 1,459 feet of shared-use path and two pedestrian bridges. One is the longest pedestrian bridge in Fairfax County.
Dranesville District Supervisor Jimmy Bierman said the project could help more people reach Metro without driving, potentially reducing the number of cars on nearby roads.
FCDOT Project Manager Sonia Shahnaj said the path makes the Silver Line more practical and convenient while helping residents avoid car trips, stay active and connect with neighbors and destinations across the region.
