A wave of Virginia laws took effect Tuesday, July 1, following the General Assembly’s 2025 session. The changes require every adult vehicle passenger to wear a seat belt, mandate age verification for social media app users and prohibit suppliers from concealing fees.

Fairfax County police are investigating a stabbing reported at 6:03 a.m. Sunday, June 29, in the 3800 block of South George Mason Drive near Skyline. The victim called 911 and was hospitalized with wounds initially considered life-threatening. His condition was later downgraded to non-life-threatening. Police had released no information about a possible suspect as of Monday afternoon.

Families in neighborhoods off Sherwood Hall Lane are opposing proposed Fairfax County Public Schools boundary changes. One draft would eliminate an attendance island at Whitman Middle School, but residents say some elementary and high school students would face longer trips.

Maryland has revived a proposal to expand MARC regional rail into Virginia and Delaware despite funding challenges facing its existing transit system. The plan released last week calls for service between Wilmington and Alexandria, along with more frequent trains from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore and Frederick.

McLean-based Capital One Financial completed its $35.3 billion acquisition of Discover Financial Services in May. The all-stock deal, announced last year and reviewed by regulators, is the largest acquisition in Capital One’s history.

Former CIA senior intelligence officer Kristin Wood is now leading August Interactive, a video game development and entertainment studio in Reston. Wood left the agency in 2015 after a 26-year career. The studio is developing its first game, code-named “Operation Fiero,” for release in early 2027.

In Falls Church, an ad hoc task force is continuing to study possible changes to trash collection as a key deadline approaches. The City Council formed the panel while considering whether to stop funding single-family trash collection through general taxes.

Fairfax City’s free Tiny Music Fest is turning a small Old Town parking lot into a monthly concert venue. The series began in May and is scheduled to continue through September.
