Oakton Residents Ring In Year of the Horse With Dance and Lanterns

Residents of Sunrise at Hunter Mill in Oakton marked the Lunar New Year on Saturday, Feb. 28, with an afternoon of dance, crafts and film.

The celebration opened at 1 p.m. with a performance by the Xuejuan Dance Ensemble in the Bistro. Residents were then invited to make lanterns at 2 p.m., followed by a 2:30 p.m. screening of “The Joy Luck Club.”

A daily activity board displayed the full schedule and recognized 2026 as the Year of the Horse.

The festivities took place during a holiday observed by billions of people across several cultures. Lunar New Year traditions include Tết in Vietnam, Seollal in Korea and Losar in Tibet.

In the 2026 cycle, Lunar New Year began Tuesday, Feb. 17. The observance was set to continue through March 3, concluding with the Lantern Festival. The Feb. 28 program brought several elements of the season together for residents ahead of that finale.
