A 2-year-old hospitalized after a double-fatal crash in Oakton has died from her injuries, Fair Oaks District police announced Thursday. Police said the driver had reached 116 mph with two children in the back seat before striking a barrier.

In Richmond, a new requirement raising Virginia’s minimum age for handgun purchases from 18 to 21 remains unimplemented. The General Assembly passed the measure April 22 with an emergency enactment clause added by Gov. Abigail Spanberger, but Virginia State Police had not begun conducting the mandated background checks a month later. Del. Garrett McGuire, the bill’s patron, expressed frustration over the delay.

Anthony Eugene Robinson, known as the “shopping cart killer,” has received two life sentences plus 10 years in prison. He was convicted of murdering Beth Redmon and Tonita Smith in Harrisonburg in 2021.

Rep. James Walkinshaw officially became the Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District on May 26. The first-term congressman had been expected to face Bree Fram in a primary, but the former Space Force colonel ended her campaign after Virginia’s new district maps were rejected. Fram said the change left too little time to redirect her campaign.

Residents along part of Fairway Drive in Reston are voting on a Fairfax County traffic-calming plan that would install three speed humps on the road’s western end. Voting began in April and concludes June 13. Steve Sarandos, who leads the task force behind the proposal, said the group has examined speeding and traffic concerns there for seven years.

Virginia officials are seeking to put express-lane and toll revenue toward public transit instead of road projects, despite continuing public concerns about priced highways. The commonwealth expects its express lanes to produce an estimated $46.5 million.

Fairfax City recorded the fastest population-growth rate among Virginia cities and towns with at least 20,000 residents from 2020 through 2025, according to newly compiled Census figures. Its population increased from 24,146 to 26,772 during that period.

Tysons-based television station operator Tegna Inc. named longtime Washington-area media executive Patrick Paolini as its new CEO on Monday. The appointment comes as litigation seeks to unwind Tegna’s merger with Nexstar Media Group Inc. Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said earlier in May that Tegna would operate as a Nexstar subsidiary while the dispute remains unresolved.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout Wednesday, with patchy fog before 11 a.m. and a high near 80 degrees. Storms will likely continue into the evening before easing around 11 p.m. Patchy fog may persist until 1 a.m., followed by mostly cloudy skies and a low near 64. The chance of rain is 60%.
