Two U.S. Park Police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Bijan Ghaisar have returned to work after federal investigators cleared them in the case.

Lucas Vinyard and Alejandro Amaya had remained on paid administrative duty and later paid leave since Ghaisar was shot on Nov. 17, 2017.

Elsewhere in Fairfax County, one person suffered life-threatening injuries in a house fire in the 7500 block of Long Pine Drive in Springfield. Firefighters brought the blaze under control, and no firefighters were injured.

A lawsuit filed Monday accuses the owner of Compass Coffee of fraudulently misusing pandemic relief funds. The legal action follows a split between the Washington-based chain’s co-founders, with its former chief executive bringing the allegations. Compass operates 20 locations across the D.C. region, including shops in Fairfax City and West Falls Church.

Fairfax County police arrested a 32-year-old man Monday, Jan. 13, in connection with business burglaries. He is accused of breaking into a business in the 9400 block of Mathy Drive in Mantua the previous day. Officers found him outside an Annandale business that had reported a larceny and identified him from surveillance footage, police said.

In Tysons, Marufuji Japanese Market will open its new store at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. Fuji Mart Corp. Vice President Joshua Nakama said plans were still being finalized, with giveaways, discounts and demonstrations expected during the grand-opening celebration.

Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is also planning a major restoration of Turkeycock Run in Bren Mar Park near Lincolnia. Project design is expected to be finished in late summer or early fall of 2025.

Fairfax City’s five newly elected school board members were sworn in Monday night at City Hall. Lauren A. Bartelme, Kristina M. Cecere, Amit S. Hickman, Sarah M. Kelsey and Carolyn S. Pitches won their seats in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.

At George Mason University, inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Dr. Amarda Shehu outlined the university’s approach to AI during a podcast interview. She discussed how the technology could reshape education, employment and the broader economy.

Sunny but cold conditions are forecast for Wednesday, Jan. 15, with temperatures near 30 degrees. Northwest winds of 14 to 16 mph could gust as high as 31 mph. The night should be mostly clear, with lows around 17 and winds easing after midnight.
