Fairfax County police are investigating eight burglaries that targeted Asian American residents across the county between Jan. 12 and Feb. 21.
The thieves stole cash, jewelry, handbags, gold bars and even safes bolted to the floor. In one case, they escaped with $100,000 in cash and jewelry valued at $80,000.
Most of the break-ins occurred during the late afternoon or evening while residents were away. Police said many of the victims owned businesses, including salons and restaurants that may handle substantial amounts of cash.
Maj. James Curry said investigators believe the burglars identified those business owners and targeted their homes expecting a large payoff.
Evidence suggests the crews carefully prepared for the burglaries and watched their targets beforehand. In some homes, the thieves disconnected Wi-Fi and other electronic equipment in an apparent attempt to avoid being recorded by security cameras.
Police released surveillance footage showing three possible suspects connected to a Jan. 12 burglary in Annandale.
Investigators are contacting local business associations to warn members and gather information. Curry said authorities must act quickly on any strong lead because the same suspects may be committing similar burglaries elsewhere in the region and across the country.
