A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle early Saturday on the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway near Columbia Island, according to U.S. Park Police.

Officers were called to the scene at about 4 a.m. following a report that an adult man had been hit on the parkway. Police said the driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene and called 911.

Arlington County Fire and Rescue transported the pedestrian to a local hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

Authorities closed the parkway’s northbound lanes at Interstate 395 while investigators worked at the crash site. The closure allowed officials to conduct an accident reconstruction as part of the investigation.

U.S. Park Police said the circumstances that led to the collision remained under investigation. No further details about the pedestrian, the driver or the vehicle involved were immediately available.
