Fairfax County police are searching for a man accused of trying to abduct a woman in the 8000 block of Braddock Road in Annandale. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call 911.
Two people were killed and a third was injured in a fiery crash on Interstate 95 north near the Fairfax County Parkway exit early Sunday. Virginia State Police said a speeding vehicle left the highway, struck a guardrail and a tree, and caught fire. Bystanders rescued one passenger, while the driver and another passenger died at the scene.
A separate high-speed pursuit early Sunday ended with two vehicles destroyed by fire. State police said a driver fled a trooper on the Capital Beltway near Telegraph Road, continued north on I-395 and entered an Edsall Road apartment complex. The driver abandoned the moving car and ran before being caught. The car rolled into a parked vehicle, igniting a fire that destroyed both.
At a Fairfax County NAACP forum, the mother of a Thoreau Middle School student told FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid that her son had repeatedly experienced anti-Black harassment. She said the abuse included racial slurs and incidents in which he was given bananas and called a monkey. Reid said, “We obviously need to do better,” and promised to meet with the family.
Fairfax County juries awarded a teacher and a parent a combined $1.05 million in defamation cases against David Gordon, who operates the conservative X account The Virginia Project. The lawsuits concerned 2025 posts that linked the plaintiffs to grooming and child abduction. Teacher Robert Rigby received $350,000, while parent Vanessa Hall was awarded $700,000. Gordon intends to appeal.
Reston native Brooke Frishman will represent Israel at the World Lacrosse Championship in Tokyo on July 24 while carrying a piece of her family’s Olympic history. She plans to bring the warm-up jacket worn by her grandfather, U.S. gymnast Greg Weiss, at the 1964 Olympics. Frishman said the experience “feels like a movie.”
Virginia budget negotiators have proposed charging data centers $0.011 for every kilowatt-hour of electricity they consume. The fee is expected to generate $1.2 billion over the two-year budget cycle as the industry puts increasing pressure on power grids and water supplies, particularly in Northern Virginia. The agreement still requires approval from both legislative chambers and Gov. Abigail Spanberger.
A Spotsylvania County judge has declined to halt Virginia’s ban on assault-weapon sales, rejecting an argument that the state constitution’s militia clause prevents the restriction. The decision allows the law signed by Spanberger to take effect July 1. Attorney General Jay Jones said the commonwealth would defend against any appeal.
Complaints about inadequate medical treatment and harsh conditions are increasing at immigration detention facilities as the Trump administration expands the detained population to about 68,000 people. At the Farmville Detention Center in central Virginia, about three-quarters of its nearly 500 detainees reportedly have no criminal record. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have each made oversight visits.
Monday’s forecast calls for humid conditions and a high near 90 degrees, followed by potentially strong or severe storms, mainly after 2 p.m. and into the evening. Damaging wind gusts are the leading concern, though a tornado and flooding downpours are also possible. The overnight low is expected to be around 66.
Three new legal notices have also been posted. A restaurant is seeking a license for on- and off-premises beer and wine sales, with objections due within 30 days. A retail day spa is pursuing an on-premises beer and wine license. A response to a filed custody complaint is due Aug. 17, 2026, to avoid default.
