Pride, Juneteenth and Progress Take Over June Library Calendar

Library branches across Fairfax County will spotlight LGBTQIA+ activism, emancipation, suffrage and civil rights throughout June with workshops, crafts, trivia and historical programs.

Library branches across Fairfax County will spotlight LGBTQIA+ activism, emancipation, suffrage and civil rights throughout June with workshops, crafts, trivia and historical programs.

Scheduled events include:

June Make & Take: Color Your World — Herndon Fortnightly Library, various dates beginning June 2. Visitors can create inspirational, soothing rainbow crafts.
John Hope Franklin Orchid Book Centerpieces — Chantilly Regional Library, Sunday, June 7. Participants will transform old books into centerpieces honoring historian, author and civil rights activist John Hope Franklin.
Pride Month Zine Workshop with NoVa Prism Center — Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library, Tuesday, June 9. Attendees can make their own Pride-themed zines with the NoVa Prism Center.
STEAM Team: Color Adventure — Burke Centre Library, Saturday, June 13. A special guest will help participants explore rainbows through colorful STEAM activities.
Zines for Pride — Lorton Library, Tuesday, June 16. Teens and adults can learn how to create zines as a form of self-expression.
What We Commemorate on Juneteenth — Virtual, Wednesday, June 17. Author Dr. Richard Bell will discuss Juneteenth’s history and the events of June 19, 1865.
Juneteenth Picnic — Sherwood Regional Library, Thursday, June 18. The lunchtime outdoor gathering will combine a picnic with storytime.
Crafts for Pride Month — Thomas Jefferson Library, Saturday, June 20. Pride-themed craft projects will be available while supplies last.
The Fab Facts: Pride Trivia — Martha Washington Library, Monday, June 22. Players can test their knowledge of LGBTQ+ history and popular culture for a chance to win Pride-themed prizes.
Frances Perkins: The First Female Member of the Cabinet — Richard Byrd Library, Tuesday, June 30. The program will examine Perkins’ advocacy for maximum working hours, minimum wages and protections for workers of all ages and sexes.

Dates and times may change, so attendees should confirm details in the individual event listings. The library’s collection team is also offering a related reading list featuring stories of pride and progress.
