Fairfax County authorities are investigating racist and antisemitic graffiti found near a school bus stop in Burke, while City of Fairfax police are renewing their request for help in a suspicious missing-person case.
The graffiti was discovered Wednesday morning on utility boxes and neighborhood signs near Burke Centre Parkway and Wheaton Drive.
In the City of Fairfax, investigators are seeking information about Amanda L. Childess, who has not been heard from since disappearing under suspicious circumstances on March 6, 2022. Police said evidence indicates she may have been the victim of foul play.
Meanwhile, some Washington-area leaders are considering a more forceful response to the Trump administration after weeks of reacting defensively. Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw told a Council of Governments meeting that the region needs to “continue to fight.”
Fairfax County businesses that suffered financial losses because of last July’s drought can still apply for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Applications are due April 7, 2025.
Construction to renovate the tennis and pickleball courts at Wakefield Park in Annandale is expected to begin in early April. The Fairfax County Park Authority plans to increase the number of courts reserved for pickleball.
Free Lyft rides will be available from Saturday, March 15, through Monday, March 17, as part of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s 2025 St. Patrick’s Day SoberRide campaign to discourage impaired driving.
The Park Authority and Greater Oakton Community Association also finalized an agreement March 7 to support the historic Oakton Schoolhouse. The association will use the building for meetings, events, rentals, historical presentations, classes, theater productions and educational programs.
Friday’s patchy fog is expected to clear by 9 a.m., with initially cloudy skies becoming mostly sunny and temperatures reaching about 59 degrees. Clouds will increase Friday night, when temperatures will fall to around 44 and patchy fog could return after 3 a.m.
