Record-breaking heat swept across the Washington region on April 15, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees in the District and 91 at both Dulles International Airport and Baltimore. It marked Washington’s fourth record high of 2026.
Fairfax City police arrested a 54-year-old man at Hilltop Shopping Center after responding Friday to a reported weapons violation at the Main Street plaza. The man was reportedly seen waving a machete and was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and obstruction of justice.
Fairfax County firefighters were called to the 13400 block of Coppermine Road in Herndon around 12:42 p.m. Wednesday after an outdoor fire began spreading to a ground-floor apartment. One person was evaluated at the scene, and no firefighters were injured. Investigators were working to determine the cause.
Virginia Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee pressed Finance Secretary Mark Sickles on Tuesday over Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s veto of legislation that would have legalized skill games. They also criticized an amendment to the state’s cannabis retail framework that would delay recreational sales until July 2027.
Spanberger signed legislation Monday adding Virginia to the National Popular Vote Compact. Participating states agree to award their presidential electoral votes to the winner of the nationwide popular vote. The compact will take effect only after participating states represent at least 270 electoral votes.
The governor also signed a law ending tax exemptions for several organizations associated with the Confederacy. The United Daughters of the Confederacy, an organization founded in 1894 for Confederate descendants, is the law’s most prominent target.
Dessert 39 has drawn crowds since holding a soft opening in Annandale earlier in April. Manager Sean Oh said the cafe at 7326A Little River Turnpike is the Korean chain’s first location outside South Korea. It occupies the former Manoa bakery and cafe space.
The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority announced April 14 that qualified first-time homebuyers can apply for down-payment loans funded through a Virginia Housing grant. Applicants must meet several requirements, including having household income at or below 80% of the area median.
Mostly sunny conditions and a high near 92 degrees were expected Thursday. A light southwest wind was forecast to increase to 5 to 9 mph during the morning. Thursday night was expected to be partly cloudy with a low around 69 and a 30% chance of showers, mainly after 2 a.m.
