A man who entered pleas last month in connection with several assaults in Reston has been arrested again, this time following an alleged abduction attempt in Pentagon City. The latest incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of South Hayes Street.
In West Falls Church, ceiling sprinklers contained a fire at Mavana Nails & Waxing in Graham Park Plaza. The blaze began around 10:35 p.m. April 28 after a lithium-ion battery discharged, according to Fairfax County fire investigators.
The double murder case involving Brendan Banfield and Juliana Peres Magalhães is attracting interest from true crime producers. Magalhães, the Northern Virginia au pair who admitted helping Banfield plan the killings of his wife and a stranger after the two began an affair, told jurors during Banfield’s January trial that producers had contacted her while she was behind bars. State law could restrict her ability to profit from the story.
Residents from Willow Run and surrounding Annandale neighborhoods packed a conference room at the Mason Government Center on May 6 to oppose a proposed 120-unit multifamily building at 6675 Little River Turnpike. Warith Deen Muhammad, 39, of McLean, was sentenced Wednesday, May 6, to four years and two months in federal prison for operating a $1.5 million Ponzi scheme through an Alexandria precious-metals investment business. A Virginia traveler who was aboard a cruise ship affected by a deadly hantavirus outbreak has returned home and is being monitored by public health officials. The Virginia Department of Health said the traveler remains healthy and has shown no signs of infection.
Fairfax County will celebrate completed improvements at Hybla Valley Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 8. The renovation converted underused portions of the park, located at 3431 Lockheed Boulevard in Alexandria, into new community spaces.
