A Northern Virginia food drive is collecting meals, snacks and toiletries for middle and high school students who may otherwise go hungry.
Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn, who represents the Hunter Mill District, is hosting the drive for Food for Neighbors. Founded in Herndon in 2016, the nonprofit now partners with 50 middle and high schools across Northern Virginia, most of them in Fairfax County.
The organization supplies schools with individually packaged donations that can be distributed to students based on their needs. Requested items include shelf-stable milk cartons, preferably chocolate; Cup Noodles and macaroni-and-cheese cups that require only water; cheese or peanut butter crackers; ready-to-heat meals; chicken or tuna snack packs with crackers; and toiletries.
Residents can deliver donations to the Fairfax County North County Government Center at 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston through the close of business Friday, March 7. Monetary donations can also be made online.
Fairfax County School Board Member At-Large Kyle McDaniel recently contributed items and encouraged other residents to participate.
Donations will support the South Lakes Food Pantry, Herndon Middle and High Schools, and other schools in the area.
