Fairfax County police and Virginia State Police are reviving the “Road Shark” campaign for 2025, continuing an effort to curb aggressive driving, prevent crashes and improve road safety. The 2024 enforcement campaign produced 34,687 citations and warnings.

State Sen. Jennifer Boysko of Fairfax and Del. Briana Sewell of Prince William joined advocates and affected Virginians on Monday to urge Gov. Glenn Youngkin to approve legislation creating a statewide paid family and medical leave program. Youngkin had one week from Monday to sign or veto the bill.

Applications to the Fairfax County Police Department rose 10% in 2024, and the agency believes its focus on emerging technology may be helping recruitment. Deputy Chief Wilson Lee said the county’s Criminal Justice Academy is the first in Virginia to incorporate artificial intelligence into training.

TD Bank plans to close branches at 1750 North Hampton Avenue in Reston and 6200 Multiplex Drive in Centreville on June 5. The two are among 38 East Coast locations slated to close as the company adjusts its branch network to reflect customer needs and preferences.

A nearly two-acre triangular property between Richmond Highway and North Kings Highway could be redeveloped with a nine-story apartment building. The proposal, submitted through Fairfax County’s 2025 Site-Specific Plan Amendment process, includes ground-floor retail and an anchor grocery store at the current Office Depot site.

Fairfax County is supporting the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance’s spring “Lights Out for Birds” campaign. Residents and businesses are encouraged to limit unnecessary outdoor lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. through May 31, covering the peak spring migration period that began March 15.

Nearly 90 students from Fairfax County and Alexandria will participate Sunday in the 2025 Fairfax County Spelling Bee. The winner and runner-up will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May at the Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor.

Mount Vernon nonprofit Alice’s Kids received a high-profile boost from actor and comedian Steve Carell, a longtime supporter. In a viral video, Carell told 800 Los Angeles-area high school students that their prom tickets would be covered through a partnership with the charity.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunshine, a high near 65 degrees and northwest winds around 7 mph. Skies should remain clear overnight as temperatures fall to about 45 degrees and winds become calm.
