Liliana Alfaro arrived at Robinson Secondary School this year with a record of leading custodial teams through demanding conditions—including a January snowstorm that left her previous crew clearing an estimated 366 tons of snow.

Now Robinson’s building supervisor, Alfaro leads 24 custodians responsible for keeping the school clean and safe. Principal Tracey Philips said Alfaro’s enthusiasm has made her an essential part of the school and praised her dedication to students, employees, and the wider community.

The recognition comes ahead of National Custodian Appreciation Day on Thursday, October 2.

Alfaro served as building supervisor at Falls Church High School last school year, when she was named Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee. Principal Ben Nowak credited her leadership, expertise, dedication, and concern for both her team and the school community.

At Falls Church, Alfaro managed routine school operations while contending with an ongoing renovation. Despite those complications, she and her staff maintained a clean, safe, and welcoming campus.

Their workload became especially visible during a January snow event. One teacher estimated the team removed approximately 366 tons of snow from the parking lot—enough to form a snowball about 68 feet across.

Colleagues said Alfaro also built unity among employees from varied backgrounds. Her support extended beyond coordinating custodial work: She helped team members handle personal needs such as navigating healthcare appointments and checking on their well-being.

That trust contributed to a motivated, closely connected crew, Nowak said.

Falls Church Assistant Principal Peter Lake described Alfaro as an effective communicator who developed strong relationships with school employees, construction and design personnel, and community members. He also credited her with resolving conflicts, motivating staff, and creating a collaborative workplace.

Alfaro began serving as an acting supervisor in 2018. Before joining Robinson, she held building supervisor positions at Great Falls Elementary School, Poe Middle School, and Falls Church High School.
