The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public construction update Wednesday, Feb. 19, on the widening of about 1.5 miles of Rolling Road in Springfield.

The “pardon our dust” meeting will take place in Barker Hall at Irving Middle School, 8100 Old Keene Mill Road. A presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by questions for the construction team.

Crews are expanding Rolling Road, also known as Route 638, from two lanes to four between Viola Street and Kenwood Avenue. The corridor carries an average of roughly 21,000 vehicles per day.

Plans call for a raised median, shared-use path and sidewalk. The project also includes a new traffic signal at Greeley Boulevard, an upgraded signal at Barnack Drive, and improvements to stormwater systems and access management.

Weekday lane closures may occur during daytime hours outside peak travel periods. Pedestrians could also encounter temporary closures of existing sidewalks and paths and should follow posted detours.

The work is the second phase of an $83 million project intended to improve safety, traffic flow, accessibility, and travel for bicyclists and pedestrians. Funding comes from federal, state, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and local sources, including Virginia’s Revenue Sharing program.

The first phase improved the intersection of Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road and was completed in 2021. The current phase is scheduled to be finished in late 2027.

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians should watch for changing traffic patterns, avoid distractions and use caution in active work zones.
