A Sunday afternoon fire at Bren Mar Park Elementary School in Alexandria will not prevent students from returning to class on Monday, April 20.

The fire broke out April 19 among materials on the roof of a new portion of the school that remains under construction. It was contained to that area and did not reach the main school building. No one was inside at the time of the incident.

Fairfax County firefighters responded quickly and brought the fire under control. School officials credited that response with keeping the situation from becoming more serious.

An investigation into what caused the fire remained underway Sunday. However, the Fire Marshal inspected the situation and determined that the school was safe for students to return the following day.

Classes are expected to continue without disruption despite the fire. Fairfax County Public Schools thanked the firefighters who responded, along with members of the wider community who expressed concern following the incident.
