Angela Ah Ryoung Sung’s influence reaches far beyond the colorful art room at Sangster Elementary School. The 2024 Outstanding Elementary School New Teacher finalist teaches more than 400 students each week while creating opportunities for young artists to share their work across the community.

Sung carefully prepares materials, fires clay, cleans brushes and builds engaging classroom displays. Colleague Meghan Buckles said that steady behind-the-scenes work ensures students have the supplies and support they need.

Her lessons combine technology with clear, accessible instruction. Sung produces videos demonstrating artistic techniques and reinforces them with visual and verbal directions. Her organized classroom is designed to help students with a range of learning needs participate confidently.

Peers describe Sung as calm, positive and approachable. She develops relationships with students, adapts activities when needed and works with colleagues to provide consistent support throughout the school.

Sung also organizes the Pyramid Art Show at Lake Braddock Secondary School, where artwork from students at multiple schools is displayed for the wider community. At Sangster, she maintains the Principal’s Gallery, showcasing pieces that reflect students’ individuality and artistic development.

A fifth-grade student said Sung helps children improve without judging their work and consistently finds ways for them to succeed.

Principal Allison Jankovich said Sung advances Sangster’s mission by giving students opportunities to express their creativity and individuality. She described watching Sung develop as an arts educator and positively influence students as a privilege.
