Fairfax County Public Schools warned families on March 4, 2025, that severe weather could disrupt school operations and activities the following day.
The National Weather Service forecast included the possibility of severe thunderstorms, strong winds and tornadoes. Schools had safety plans in place, and families were urged to remind children to follow instructions from teachers and administrators during storms.
If a Tornado Warning were issued near or during dismissal, students would remain at school until the warning expired. FCPS said it would continue monitoring conditions and announce any operational changes as needed.
Student drivers and walkers were advised to limit outdoor plans and remain near sturdy shelter when tornadoes were possible. Anyone caught in a vehicle should stay inside and cover their head rather than shelter beneath a highway overpass, where winds can intensify.
People stranded outside without nearby shelter should lie flat in the nearest ditch or low-lying area and protect their head with their hands. Families could find cancellation procedures and critical weather resources on the FCPS website.
