Fairfax County transportation officials will hold a public meeting June 1 to explain the latest design and land acquisition plans for the Shirley Gate Road Extension Project.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria at Willow Springs Elementary School, 5400 Willow Springs School Road in Fairfax. Staff from the Fairfax County Department of Transportation will present an overview of the proposed design and outline the project’s next steps, with a focus on acquiring land needed for construction.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The project would extend Shirley Gate Road south from its T-intersection with Braddock Road to Fairfax County Parkway. Plans call for a two-lane road with additional facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Once completed, the extension would give drivers another route from northbound Fairfax County Parkway to eastbound Interstate 66.
