Anthony Eugene Robinson, known as the “shopping cart killer,” was sentenced Friday to life in prison for murdering two women in Harrisonburg in 2021 and moving their bodies in a shopping cart before hiding them on an undeveloped lot.
Robinson was convicted in 2025 of killing Allene “Beth” Redmon, 54, and Tonita Lorice Smith, 39, in a Harrisonburg motel room during the fall of 2021. The jury found him guilty of two counts each of first-degree murder, aggravated murder and concealing a dead body.
During the four-day trial, jurors saw motel surveillance footage showing Robinson entering a room with each woman on separate occasions. The videos showed him leaving the following mornings with a sheet-covered shopping cart.
The jury recommended four life sentences, an additional 10 years in prison and a $400,000 fine.
Robinson is also wanted in connection with the killing of Sonya Champ, a 40-year-old Northwest D.C. woman whose body was discovered inside a blanket-covered shopping cart several blocks from Union Station.
Authorities have also identified Robinson as a suspect in the Fairfax County deaths of Stephanie Harrison, 48, of Redding, California, and Cheyenne Brown, 29, of Southeast D.C. Their remains were found in a plastic container near a shopping cart in woods close to the Moon Inn Hotel in Alexandria, near the 2400 block of Fairhaven Avenue.
Robinson has not been formally charged in the deaths of Harrison or Brown.
