Fairfax County government offices remained open Wednesday, Jan. 8, despite lingering snow and temperatures forecast to stay near freezing.

County employees were granted unscheduled leave, while teleworkers were expected to work remotely or use personal leave. Emergency personnel were instructed to report as scheduled.

Fairfax County police officers also assisted with the funeral escort for former President Jimmy Carter in Washington, D.C., calling their participation in the historic tribute an honor.

In Richmond, a water crisis disrupted the opening of the Virginia General Assembly’s legislative session. The House and Senate planned to convene briefly at noon Wednesday before recessing until Monday, Jan. 13.

Virginia’s state flag, meanwhile, emerged as a symbol of resistance in South Korea as impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol faced abuse-of-power charges. A Virginia flag displayed outside Gwangju City Hall had been presented to the city by Gov. Glenn Youngkin during a November visit focused on agricultural cooperation.

The Washington Post cut about 4% of its workforce Tuesday, including nearly its entire public relations department and 73 advertising employees. The newsroom was not affected.

Closer to home, the Virginia Department of Transportation began the first phase of right-of-way work for the Route 1 widening project. Partial property acquisitions are underway between Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and an area just north of Frye Road. Acquisitions for the second phase were expected to begin during the second quarter of 2025.

Kajiken, a Japanese restaurant specializing in abura soba, opened at the end of 2024 in Pinecrest Plaza in Lincolnia. The restaurant occupies the former Foxfire Grill space at 6550-K Little River Turnpike and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Reston-based IT contractor Agile Defense acquired McLean-based IntelliBridge, bringing together two portfolio companies owned by Chevy Chase investment firm Enlightenment Capital. The acquisition doubled Agile Defense’s workforce to more than 2,000 employees and expanded its portfolio.

Wednesday’s forecast called for partly sunny skies, a high near 30 degrees and west winds of 10 to 14 mph, with gusts reaching 24 mph. Temperatures were expected to fall to around 17 overnight under partly cloudy skies, with northwest wind gusts as high as 22 mph.
