Another round of winter weather is expected to disrupt travel and activities across the D.C. region today, with 1 to 3 inches of snow forecast for Fairfax County and other parts of Northern Virginia.
The National Weather Service placed the region under a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rain and sleet are expected to arrive first in Fairfax County before changing to snow after 2 p.m.
Ahead of the storm, the National Park Service closed the northern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway at 6 a.m. The closure extends from I-495 in McLean to Spout Run in Arlington.
The park service said the shutdown will allow crews to treat the roadway and restore safe driving conditions. Reopening could take longer because crews must use smaller equipment to navigate the parkway’s narrow lanes and configurations. Drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes.
Fairfax County Public Schools also canceled all activities on school grounds scheduled to begin after noon.
The weather service warned that accumulating snow could create slippery roads across portions of Washington, D.C., central Maryland and Northern Virginia. Drivers were urged to slow down, use caution and call 511 for current road conditions.
