Northern Virginia faces snow, freezing rain and sleet Wednesday as several major local developments unfold, including reopened runways at Reagan National Airport, a new high school sports policy and an attempted carjacking near a Metro station.

Two runways at Reagan National reopened Tuesday following last month’s deadly midair collision. Officials also restored access to part of the Potomac River, while the Federal Aviation Administration raised the airport’s hourly arrival rate to 28 aircraft.

The Virginia High School League announced that it will follow President Donald Trump’s Feb. 5 executive order barring transgender athletes assigned male at birth from competing in girls’ sports. The decision came after Gov. Glenn Youngkin publicly urged the league to comply.

Virginia is experiencing its worst surge in bird flu since the nationwide outbreak began in 2022. USDA figures covering confirmed reports from Jan. 4 through Feb. 3 ranked the commonwealth seventh nationally in the number of birds affected by avian influenza.

Fairfax County police charged a 30-year-old man with carjacking following an incident near the Huntington Metro station. Officers responded to the 5700 block of Metroview Parkway at 10:45 p.m. on Feb. 9 after a victim reported being assaulted by a man who tried to take his vehicle.

Fresh World, an international supermarket coming to the Mount Vernon Square retail center, is scheduled to open during the second week of March. Property manager Joshua Kim said additional grand-opening details will be announced later.

Eligible Fairfax County residents and their families can receive free help preparing federal and state income-tax returns. Assistance is available at locations around the county through the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The Greener Mason Advisory Committee presented its final report at a community meeting Monday, Feb. 10. Convened last April, the committee developed short- and long-term recommendations intended to make Mason District more sustainable, healthy, green and attractive.
