A contract to provide solar power to 15 elementary schools and new social studies instructional materials won approval during the April 24, 2025, regular board meeting.
The board also adopted a proclamation honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day and approved the 2024-25 report for Strategic Plan Goal 5, “Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation.”
The meeting opened at 7 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a national anthem performance by the Spring Hill Elementary School Strings under Margot Mezvinsky’s direction.
Board members recognized Virginia High School League teams and selected performing arts ensembles for their Winter 2025 achievements. The honorees were:
- Chantilly High School boys swim and dive
- Chantilly High School speech
- Cooper Middle School Symphonic Band
- Lake Braddock Secondary School gymnastics
- South County High School girls indoor track and field
- South Lakes High School boys basketball
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Scholastic Bowl
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Symphonic Wind Ensemble
- West Springfield High School boys indoor track and field
- West Springfield High School Wind Symphony
Six members of the public spoke during the community participation period. Student representative Megan Sawant also delivered a report.
Superintendent Reid presented the Goal 5 report before its approval. The strategic-plan review process includes a written draft, a work session and a public presentation of the final report. Each review concentrates on one of five goals while updating progress in the other four and identifying activities planned for areas needing improvement.
Reid also delivered an academic presentation about Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID.
Through its consent agenda, the board adopted minutes from the March 13 meeting and policies addressing multi-agency placement for children with disabilities, operational guidelines for school libraries and controversial issues. It also approved the monthly employee separation report and awarded several contracts.
Sizemore Heizer reported on the Budget Committee, while Dunne provided an update from the Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee. Reid presented superintendent matters, followed by remarks from St. John-Cunning, Lady, Dunne, Anderson, McElveen, Meren and Frisch.
The meeting adjourned at 10:43 p.m.
Upcoming sessions included an Audit Committee meeting at 4:30 p.m. April 28, a Governance Committee meeting at 3 p.m. April 29, a work session at 11:30 a.m. May 6 and a regular meeting at 7 p.m. May 8.
