West Springfield defeated Lake Braddock 28-14 on Saturday, Nov. 29, sending the Spartans to the Region 6C championship and one step closer to the state title.
The playoff victory gained national exposure Sunday night when a clip appeared during the NFL game between the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos.
Playing in cold, blustery conditions at West Springfield, the Spartans capitalized on a first-quarter interception. Quarterback Scott Lewis later added a touchdown run to help secure the win.
Lake Braddock attempted a Hail Mary on the final play, but several West Springfield defenders knocked the ball around before a Spartan intercepted it as time expired.
The victory continued a commanding postseason run for West Springfield. The Spartans beat West Potomac 48-13 on Nov. 14 and Fairfax 28-7 on Nov. 21.
West Springfield will face North Stafford in the regional championship at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at North Stafford High School in Stafford County, about 30 miles south of Springfield.
