A 30-year-old man is being held without bond after police accused him of abducting a woman and attempting to sexually assault her as she walked home in Springfield.

Officers responded to the 6700 block of Metropolitan Center Drive shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 27. Police said an unknown man approached the woman and briefly spoke with her before forcibly grabbing her.

The woman fought off the attacker and escaped. She sustained minor injuries.

Officers searched the surrounding area but did not find the man that morning. Major Crimes Bureau detectives took over the investigation, produced a composite sketch and later identified a suspect.

The man was arrested Feb. 1 and charged with abduction with intent to defile, attempted sexual assault and stalking. He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Victim specialists have been assigned to help the woman obtain appropriate resources and assistance.
