The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Virginia’s effort Friday to restore a congressional map that could have helped Democrats gain four seats in the narrowly divided House of Representatives. The order was issued without any noted dissent.

In Centreville, a 14-year-old boy suffered a non-life-threatening hand injury Sunday when a shotgun exploded while he was at a shooting range. Fairfax County police said the teenager was hospitalized.

Virginia could also move closer to allowing four-story buildings with a single stairway. The state Board of Housing and Community Development advanced the proposed code change last week, positioning it for possible adoption. Supporters say the revision could make housing projects more feasible on vacant or underused properties.

Irma Garcia of Woodbridge earned her bachelor’s degree from George Mason University at age 72 after delaying her education decades ago to raise her family. She celebrated alongside thousands of other graduates during commencement events over the weekend.

McLean-based Iridium Communications has agreed to pay $366.7 million for the portion of Aireon it does not already own. Iridium currently holds a 39% stake in Aireon, a joint venture launched in 2011 that operates a space-based system providing real-time global air traffic information.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold an in-person meeting on its Route 29 Active Transportation Study at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Timber Lane Elementary School. Proposed improvements include sidewalks, bicycle paths, transit stops and crossings.

A business has applied for a retail license permitting on- and off-premises wine and beer sales. Objections may be submitted within 30 days.
