Fairfax County police arrested a 16-year-old boy Wednesday, May 13, and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing at the Farrington Place condominiums in Huntington.
The stabbing occurred Saturday, May 9. Police said the teenager and the victim knew each other and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
A family of geese created a different kind of disruption Thursday afternoon, backing up westbound I-66 traffic in Arlington for more than an hour. A Metro Transit Police K-9 officer protected the birds alone for about 45 minutes before Virginia State Police and Arlington County police arrived to help.
Virginia’s redistricting dispute is also continuing. The NAACP asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a Virginia Supreme Court ruling that struck down the state’s redistricting referendum. The organization argued that the decision nullified the votes of millions of Virginians who approved the measure in April.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she remains focused on the fall midterm elections and encouraging voter turnout after Virginia Democrats filed an emergency appeal in the redistricting case. Spanberger said the 2026 elections will use the current map regardless of how the appeal is resolved.
Fairfax County Public Schools, meanwhile, plans to expand its Montessori offerings to additional schools during the 2026-2027 academic year. The district launched its first program under the learning model during the current school year.
In Washington, the Smithsonian Castle is set to reopen temporarily on the National Mall next week after being closed for years. The reopening, featuring historic treasures and New England food, is part of the Smithsonian’s plans for the nation’s 250th anniversary as major renovations continue on the Mall’s south side.
A long-vacant commercial building at 6320 Castle Place in Seven Corners has secured a new tenant. Redwood K-Wellness plans to open its second location there, offering spa treatments focused on scalp care and promoting thicker, healthier hair.
The Fairfax County Park Authority has received a Better Project Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. The federal honor recognizes notable energy, water or waste-reduction work completed at individual facilities.
Friday’s forecast calls for sunshine, a high near 71 degrees and northwest winds of 10 to 13 mph, with gusts reaching 20 mph. Skies should remain mostly clear Friday night as temperatures fall to around 53 degrees and winds become calm.
