Three Old Town Houses Unite for Freedom House Fundraiser

Three historic Old Town properties will come together Sunday, July 20, for a free literary fundraiser supporting the Freedom House Museum Rehabilitation Project.

Three historic Old Town properties will come together Sunday, July 20, for a free literary fundraiser supporting the Freedom House Museum Rehabilitation Project.

The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at Morrison House Hotel, 116 S. Alfred Street. The program will combine historical discussions about Freedom House with readings from Spite House, a contemporary mystery set in Old Town Alexandria. Admission is free, but advance online reservations are requested.

Gretchen Bulova, director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, will discuss Freedom House’s history and provide an update on its rehabilitation.

The featured readers will include actor and retired jurist William T. Newman; WETA Classical announcer and producer Nicole Lacroix; Old Town Crier Ben Fiore-Walker; and Spite House author John Wasowicz.

Brendan O’Leary, who owns the Prince Street spite house that inspired the home depicted in the mystery, will also participate.

Copies of Spite House will be sold during the event, with 40% of the proceeds benefiting the Freedom House restoration project.
