New license plate-reading cameras are being installed along the Dulles Toll Road, but officials say they are not intended to catch drivers avoiding tolls.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said the Flock cameras are part of a broader Virginia network used to identify stolen vehicles and assist with Amber Alerts.
In Fort Hunt, a person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a house fire early Tuesday. Fairfax County firefighters responded around 2:40 a.m. to the 2100 block of Basset Street following a report of smoke. Two dogs were found dead, and investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger approved legislation Monday night ending Virginia’s centuries-old treatment of suicide as a common-law crime. The change comes a decade after Fairfax County firefighter Nicole Mittendorff died by suicide, an event that affected her family and prompted attention to the law.
Spanberger also amended dozens of bills and returned them to the General Assembly for reconsideration. Her proposed changes take a more moderate approach to several priorities advanced by the Democratic legislative majority, creating an early public divide between the governor and lawmakers.
The Potomac River has been named the nation’s most endangered river in a ranking by the nonprofit American Rivers.
