Virginia’s statewide tornado drill is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10. Fairfax County officials are encouraging residents to practice taking shelter beneath a table or desk, moving to a low-level interior space, or protecting their head and neck in an interior hallway.
A January sewer-pipe collapse along the Potomac could also affect household water bills across the region. Although DC Water is responsible for repairs, a cost-sharing agreement covering the 54-mile sewer line calls for utilities in Maryland and Fairfax and Loudoun counties to pay portions of the estimated $20 million expense.
In Richmond, a proposal from Fairfax Democratic Sen. Saddam Salim concerning artificial intelligence in political advertising has changed significantly. Salim initially sought disclosure requirements for political ads made with AI, but a House committee converted the measure into an anti-defamation proposal that would direct courts to quickly examine complaints about allegedly false political advertisements.
Another bill would give Virginia renters more time to settle overdue rent before landlords begin eviction proceedings. HB15, backed by Del. Cia Price of Newport News and other Democrats, would extend the payment period from the current five days to 14 days.
Fairfax County police are investigating a Feb. 16 robbery in the Edgewater Townhomes near Reston Town Center. Police released a composite sketch on March 9 of a possible suspect. The victim said he approached a man who appeared to be injured on the ground, but the man sprang up, assaulted him and stole his credit cards.
Golf simulator company Golfzon is expanding the role of its Chantilly operation. The Seoul-based business is moving its global business team from South Korea to the United States as it pursues growing demand for indoor golf in North America and elsewhere. Golfzon America CEO Sean Pyun will oversee the division from the company’s offices at 3863 Centerview Drive in Dulles Business Park, where its U.S. arm has operated since 2016.
Northern Virginia apparel brand Bored Rebel will receive an international showcase through gift bags prepared for nominees at the 98th Academy Awards. The bags will include several clothing products from the local T-shirt company.
The Fairfax County Park Authority is recruiting hundreds of seasonal employees for the summer. Positions are available at parks, recreation and nature centers, historic sites, golf courses and pools throughout the county.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 77 degrees. Calm winds are expected to turn southerly at 5 to 7 mph during the afternoon. Skies should remain mostly clear overnight, with a low around 61 and south winds of 3 to 5 mph.
