Registration is open for the sixth annual Tour de Hunter Mill, a community bicycle ride that will bring cyclists through Vienna’s neighborhoods, parks and trails on Sunday, May 3.

Participants may choose an 11-mile or 19-mile route, with both options designed for riders ranging from beginners to experienced cyclists.

The rain-or-shine event will begin and end at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. It is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, although cyclists may take as much time as they need to finish.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, who launched the ride in 2021, said the routes change each year to offer new scenery and showcase bicycle-friendly areas across the district. The 2025 event focused farther west around Reston and Herndon, including recently added pedestrian and cycling facilities.

This year’s routes will pass through Vienna’s bike-friendly neighborhoods and green spaces. Riders will travel near local parks, use trails along the Interstate 66 and Route 7 corridors, and explore lesser-known roads leading to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

“The idea is for this event to be for people of all abilities,” Alcorn said during the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 14. “And each year we feature new routes to give riders a fresh view and highlight bike-friendly areas across the district.”

Adult registration costs $30. Children younger than 15 may ride free when accompanied by a registered adult. Participants will also receive commemorative tie-dyed bicycle socks.

A portion of the proceeds will support local cycling advocacy through the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling.
