Traffic fatalities across the D.C. region dropped about 18% in 2025, extending a decline from pandemic-era highs. The largest decreases occurred in the District and Prince George’s County.
Northern Virginia recorded 88 traffic deaths in 2025, down from a peak of 125 in 2022.
Fairfax County Public Schools, meanwhile, faces a transportation question as officials consider changes to school boundaries. At a Jan. 10 public hearing, the school board is expected to discuss whether buses should serve students who choose to remain at their current schools. Board members split in December over providing transportation only to students who move to their newly assigned schools.
In Fairfax City, relatives of Gret Glyer are opposing a possible plea agreement for the suspect accused of killing the CEO while he slept at home. Before a Jan. 23 status hearing, Glyer’s sister and parents said they were informed that prosecutors may allow the suspect to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, potentially resulting in confinement at a mental institution rather than prison.
State Sen. Danica Roem, whose district includes the Manassas area, has reintroduced Senate Bill 56 for the 2026 General Assembly session. The proposal would further restrict what state and local governments may charge for public records and clarify how agencies can seek court relief when handling large or complicated Freedom of Information Act requests.
A growing Virginia investment company has added another Tysons property to its portfolio. SAK Developer paid $37.5 million in December for the Embassy Suites by Hilton Tysons Corner at 8517 Leesburg Pike, according to public records.
The 1984 hotel was renovated in 2018 by former owner Nobel Investment Group. It is SAK’s third local extended-stay hotel purchase in 20 months and expands the company’s hotel portfolio to seven properties. SAK also owns Staybridge Suites Tysons-McLean.
In regional politics, Arlington resident Daniel Gray has entered the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District. Gray, an energy and sustainability program manager, became the fourth candidate seeking to defeat incumbent Rep. Don Beyer in the June 16 primary.
Reston residents can also see a connection to the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics closer to home. A smaller replica of Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn’s sculpture “Building Bridges” was installed last fall outside the JW Marriott hotel and residences.
