The outdoor plaza at Tysons Corner Center is being renamed “PenFed Plaza” under a new sponsorship agreement with PenFed Credit Union.
The deal gives the Tysons-based credit union exclusive branding opportunities across the shopping center’s campus. Financial terms were not disclosed.
PenFed branding will appear on static and digital signs around the plaza. The credit union will also become the presenting sponsor of the mall’s WiFi network and major plaza events, including the annual winter holiday kickoff and the summertime “Paws on the Plaza.”
PenFed members will receive shopping and event benefits at Tysons Corner Center, such as complimentary VIP seating for plaza programs.
PenFed is headquartered at 7940 Jones Branch Drive and has nearly 400,000 members across the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. President and CEO James Schenck said the partnership will expand the credit union’s visibility in its hometown while providing members with promotions and shows throughout the year.
Macerich, the mall’s owner and developer, touted the plaza’s schedule of free entertainment, food tastings and fitness activities. The space also supports more than 20 local community partners and hosts traditions ranging from a cherry blossom festival to visits by the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck.
Macerich President and CEO Jack Hsieh described Tysons Corner Center as a high-profile destination that attracts major brands and retailers, while Senior Vice President Petra Maruca said the property’s media network will help strengthen its community connections.
Whether shoppers embrace “PenFed Plaza” remains uncertain. The name could gain traction as EagleBank Arena did after George Mason University renamed the Patriot Center—or visitors may keep calling the gathering space simply “The Plaza.”
