Two people were assessed after a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in the 8100 block of Jones Branch Drive in Tysons. One vehicle struck a utility pole, and one patient was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
In Franklin Farm, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 3000 block of Jeannie Anna Court in Herndon. Flames were visible from an attached garage when crews arrived. One resident was transported with non-life-threatening injuries, while no firefighters were hurt. The blaze was brought under control.
The Washington region is also experiencing one of its muggiest summers in decades. From June 1 through July 16, Washington recorded 573 hours with dew points of at least 70 degrees—the second-highest total since records began in 1945. Only 1994 had more, with 603 hours.
The 15 Flood Watches issued since May represent the region’s highest number during a three-month period since 2007.
At Dulles International Airport, crews were scheduled to install the final steel beam for the new Concourse E on Thursday morning. Expected to open in fall 2026, the concourse will include 14 gates, a United Airlines lounge, upgraded restrooms and direct AeroTrain access. It is expected to replace the aging C/D concourse.
Virginia’s State Corporation Commission ruled Tuesday, July 15, that Dominion Energy’s 2024 Integrated Resource Plan is legally sufficient. However, regulators expressed concern about the utility’s continued dependence on fossil fuels and spending proposals that could significantly affect monthly electricity bills for residents and businesses.
Researchers are examining why PFAS chemicals continue to appear in the Occoquan Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to about 1 million people in Northern Virginia. The reservoir currently exceeds federal maximum contaminant levels for the potentially dangerous substances. The investigation is being conducted by the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory under Virginia Tech professor Stanley Grant.
Falls Church has hired Le Nguyen as its first outreach specialist serving the city’s Vietnamese communities. Nguyen, a veteran journalist with local connections, began work July 10 following commitments from city leaders to strengthen engagement with Vietnamese-American residents and businesses.
Fairfax County also recognized its 2025 Outstanding Volunteers during an Evening on the Ellipse celebration at the Fairfax County Government Center on Thursday, July 10. The event included an official proclamation designating July as National Park and Recreation Month in the county.
