Fairfax County is accelerating plans for a replacement fire station in Tysons by allowing several reviews that normally occur in stages to proceed at the same time.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday, March 4, to expedite the planning and zoning process for Fire Station 29 at 8300 Jones Branch Drive. County staff will review the site and building plans while a proffer condition amendment moves forward.

Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik said the project could return to the board for a final vote within a few months.

The station would share the roughly 4-acre property with an existing bus transit facility. Palchik praised that use of the site and said the project would also bring transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements.

She said the proposal had improved following input from the community, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, transportation officials and others. The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended approval of a related rezoning application in early February.

The existing three-bay Fire Station 29 at 1560 Spring Hill Road will continue operating until its replacement opens.

Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity supported advancing the land-use reviews but urged the county to reconsider the timing of planned capital projects amid budget constraints and proposed reductions affecting public safety personnel and services.

Herrity pointed to positions intended for the Lorton District Police Station, which opened in 2023 but remains unstaffed. He said completing the approvals would leave the fire station project ready to proceed when funding priorities allow.

Palchik said the replacement station would not require additional personnel because it is taking the place of an outdated facility rather than adding a new station. She also said combining the fire and transit facilities on one property would improve efficiency.
