A Tysons hotel has changed hands in a multimillion-dollar deal, while police investigate gunfire in Fairfax City and a home burglary in Annandale. The region also began 2025 after New Year’s Eve storms brought lightning, heavy rain and strong winds.
The Tysons Corner Marriott was sold to an affiliate of New York real estate investment management firm Prospect Ridge for nearly $63.9 million, or $161,227 per room. Fairfax County land records show the sale was recorded Dec. 5. The purchase appears to mark the firm’s first move into the Greater Washington hospitality market.
Fairfax City police are seeking help identifying the person who fired a gun around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 9900 block of Fairfax Square. Officers found bullet casings, but no injuries or property damage were reported. It was the neighborhood’s second shots-fired incident in December.
In Annandale, police are searching for two suspects in a Dec. 27 residential burglary. Officers responded to the 3300 block of Elm Terrace at 2:48 p.m. after a burglary alarm. A resident saw two people enter the home through surveillance cameras and activated an audible alarm, prompting them to flee before officers arrived.
Powerful storms swept through Washington, D.C., on New Year’s Eve, bringing heavy rain and wind gusts and triggering a tornado warning. Lightning struck both the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday night.
Rep. Gerry Connolly expressed heartbreak over the deadly New Orleans attack and offered condolences to the victims, their families and the city. He also thanked first responders who moved toward the danger to protect others.
Tourism continued its post-pandemic recovery in southeastern Fairfax County during 2024. The Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House and Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center were among the Mount Vernon District-area attractions reporting increased attendance.
Incoming Fairfax City Council member Anthony Amos ended 2024 by getting engaged. Amos and Monterrosa, who met in Hawaii in 2018, have tentatively scheduled their wedding ceremony for Sept. 20, 2025.
Thursday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 40 degrees. West winds of 11 to 16 mph could gust as high as 28 mph. Thursday night should be mostly clear, with a low around 29 and west winds of 6 to 9 mph.
