A Fairfax County judge has upheld the guilty verdict against former police officer Wesley Shifflett, denying a motion to dismiss his conviction for reckless handling of a firearm.
Shifflett was convicted in October after fatally shooting Timothy Johnson outside Tysons Corner Center on Feb. 22, 2023.
Opposition to a proposed Tysons casino also reached Richmond on Wednesday. Members of the No Fairfax Casino Coalition spoke against the proposed legislation alongside Virginia Sens. Jennifer Boysko and Saddam Salim and Fairfax County Supervisors Walter Alcorn and Jimmy Bierman.
Federal regulators have sued Capital One and its McLean-based holding company, Capital One Financial. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau alleges the companies deprived millions of customers of more than $2 billion in interest payments.
In Herndon, Beacon Roofing Supply is facing an attempted hostile takeover. A Connecticut building-products company has offered $11 billion in cash for the Fortune 500 business. Beacon said it reviewed the proposal, first made in November and publicly confirmed Wednesday, and found it lacking.
A former Falls Church Episcopal youth minister, Jeff Taylor, is under FBI investigation over sexual-abuse allegations. An independent investigation released in April identified three former youth-group members who allegedly experienced abuse in the 1990s or early 2000s. Taylor left the church in 2001 for positions at churches in Atlanta, where additional allegations emerged.
Fairfax County’s latest energy dashboard indicates that greenhouse-gas emissions from county operations have fallen nearly 28% since fiscal year 2018. The county credits energy-efficiency improvements in public buildings, solar-panel installations and the electrification of its vehicle fleet.
