A construction worker suffered non-life-threatening burns in Tysons this week, while Northern Virginia also saw developments involving a false emergency call, autonomous vehicles, data center pollution and new flights from Dulles International Airport.
Fairfax County’s police helicopter responded around 11:30 a.m. May 27 to the 1900 block of Cathy Lane after a male construction worker fell from a ladder and struck a live wire. He was taken to a local hospital.
False report targets justice’s home
An apparent “swatting” call targeted Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s residence Wednesday night.
Fairfax County police received a report of gunshots through the department’s non-emergency line around 9 p.m. May 27. Officers quickly checked with Supreme Court Police assigned to the home and determined that the report was fictitious.
Waymo maps Northern Virginia roads
Waymo has begun mapping parts of Northern Virginia as it explores the region for its driverless vehicle technology.
Company policy adviser Rich Harrington said Waymo vehicles were operating in Alexandria with safety drivers behind the wheel and would soon appear in Arlington. Virginia has not yet authorized fully autonomous ride-hailing services.
Data center generators raise pollution concerns
A new analysis of permits and emissions filings found that 10,500 backup generators connected to Virginia data centers could produce enough pollution to harm public health even when used infrequently.
The review covered 132 sites operating in Northern Virginia through the end of 2024. An additional 19 data centers have since been approved in the region.
Dunn Loring school building faces demolition
Fairfax County Public Schools will commemorate the Dunn Loring Center from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 30.
The building at 2334 Gallows Road has served generations of students, employees and families since opening in 1939. It is scheduled to be demolished to clear the site for a new elementary school.
Beyer moves against proposed arch
Rep. Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat, plans to introduce legislation aimed at stopping President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
The bill would prohibit federal funding for the project and prevent the federal government from constructing the arch—or a similar structure—on National Park Service land in the Washington region.
New law adds disability emergency training
Legislation sponsored by Chesterfield Del. Leslie Mehta has been signed into law, requiring certain health care providers to conduct regular emergency simulations.
The exercises are intended to help employees identify and respond to emergencies involving people with disabilities under their care.
Dulles gains two nonstop routes
United Airlines will add nonstop service from Washington Dulles to Orange County, California, and San José del Cabo, Mexico.
Daily, year-round flights to Orange County’s Santa Ana airport are scheduled to begin Aug. 11 aboard Boeing 737 aircraft. Service to San José del Cabo will start Oct. 25 and operate four times per week.
