The Vienna Community Center will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a 1960s-themed open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 17.
The free community celebration will take place at the center, 120 Cherry St. SE. A ceremonial cake cutting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Visitors can explore the facility through self-guided tours, view a photo memory wall, receive giveaways and share stories from the center’s six decades.
The vision for the community center dates to 1946, when the Vienna Lions Club donated $1,500 to a grassroots fundraising campaign. Raising the $125,000 required to build the original facility on the 2.6-acre Cherry Street property took nearly 20 years.
When it opened in 1966, the Vienna Community Center was the first facility of its kind in Northern Virginia, offering activities for people of all ages. It has since undergone four renovations and several additions, including its most recent expansion in 2017.
