The Vienna Community Center will celebrate six decades of serving residents with a 1960s-themed open house on Friday, April 17.
The free celebration runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at the community center, 120 Cherry St. SE. A ceremonial cake cutting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Visitors can explore the building through self-guided tours, browse a photo memory wall, receive giveaways and share stories from the center’s 60-year history.
The effort to create the center began in 1946, when the Vienna Lions Club contributed $1,500 to a community fundraising campaign. Organizers spent nearly 20 years raising the $125,000 needed to build the original facility on a 2.6-acre Cherry Street property.
When it opened in 1966, the center was the first facility of its kind in Northern Virginia and was designed to offer activities for people of all ages.
The building has since undergone four renovations and several additions. Its latest expansion was completed in 2017.
