Vienna officials have again postponed a decision on a proposed meals tax increase that would help pay for a new aquatics and fitness facility in the center of town.
At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Town Council temporarily deferred the plan to raise the meals tax from 3% to 4%. The additional percentage point would fund the design and construction of the facility at 301 Center St.
The town bought the three-acre property, home to Faith Baptist Church, for $5.5 million in 2020.
The council said it needs more time to examine projected construction expenses, long-term operating costs and community feedback. This marks the third delay of a vote on the proposed temporary tax increase.
“This facility would be a big investment, and before voting on how to fund its construction, we must be sure that we will have the resources to maintain it once it is built,” Mayor Linda Colbert said.
Colbert added that the council needs sufficient time for due diligence before deciding what is in the community’s best interest.
The proposal is expected to return to the council for consideration at its Aug. 25, 2025, meeting.
Vienna previously imposed a temporary meals tax increase from 2002 through 2008 to pay for the Vienna Town Green, which now serves as a central gathering place for public and private events and activities.
