Commonwealth Home Design is celebrating four decades of designing, remodeling and building homes across Northern Virginia.

Husband-and-wife team Kelvin and Susan Pierce, both Virginia Tech graduates, established the Vienna firm in 1986. Susan is a registered architect, while Kelvin is a professional engineer. Their company combines architectural design, engineering and construction services under one roof.

Commonwealth handles whole-house renovations, kitchen remodels, additions, custom homes and other design-build projects. Its service area includes Vienna, McLean, Falls Church, North Arlington, Great Falls, Oakton, Reston and Burke.

The company says its integrated staff of architects, designers, craftspeople and administrative employees allows it to coordinate projects from initial plans through construction, with an emphasis on quality control, scheduling and budget management.

Commonwealth is marking its 40th anniversary with the Vienna Business Association. The Pierces have also been active in the community: Kelvin previously served as president of Vienna Rotary and spent six years as president of its Rotary Foundation. Susan founded Days for Girls NoVA, which provides reusable menstrual-hygiene kits to women and girls in developing countries.

The firm has appeared on Qualified Remodeler Magazine’s Top 500 and Remodeling Magazine’s Top 550 lists. It has also received a Chrysalis Award and holds memberships in industry organizations including NARI, NAHB, the National Kitchen and Bath Association and the U.S. Green Building Council.
